Ductless is the answer for the spaces central air was never going to reach: finished attics, additions, sunrooms, converted garages, and the second floor of an older home that runs ten degrees warmer than the first. Each head is controlled independently, so you are not cooling rooms nobody is in.
A single outdoor unit can support multiple indoor heads. Modern inverter-driven systems also heat efficiently well below freezing, which makes them a real option for year-round conditioning in a space with no ductwork at all.
