A heat pump is a single piece of equipment that cools in summer and heats in winter by moving heat rather than burning fuel. Cold-climate models hold useful capacity far lower than the older generation did, which has changed the math considerably for this region.
For most Cincinnati homes the right configuration is dual fuel — a heat pump paired with a gas furnace, with controls that switch to gas when outdoor temperatures drop past the point where the heat pump stops being the cheaper way to make heat. You get the efficiency most of the season and the gas furnace on the coldest nights.
